With new materials, digital fabrication machines, and an infinite online knowledge base becoming more and more accessible every day, designers are using our plentiful resources to create consumable objects in vast quantities. With so many people aggressively adopting the occupation of &#x22;maker&#x22; and entering into the realm of design under the “DIY” label, the disparity between the quality and quantity of made objects is becoming increasingly worrisome. Consideration towards the intention for designing is being displaced with a tacitly undesirable need of the masses to make, consume, discard, and repeat.</span></image:caption>

While working from home, switching around the house plants and artwork became a routine hobby for me. I became attentive to how much moving a plant from one spot in my small home to another affected its growth. Unlike a tree in the ground, these houseplants, since being plucked out from some tropical soil, have been constantly displaced and forced to adjust to varying pressures inflicted by the sporadic circumstances of me, their owner. Roots are climbing out of their pots, new growths are emerging, and plants that I didn’t know could flower are flaunting their blooms in the summer! My partner and I also began to really feel rooted and secure in our home, spending lots of energy personalizing it, fixing it, or learning to love all its quirks. But as we did so, we realized it was time again to move on to our next home. It’s a bittersweet feeling to be moving out of this home we grew into so comfortably. And of course, one of the most challenging things to move again will be our many, now overgrown houseplants! This is a miniature scale model of a corner of our beloved home.</span></image:caption>

I was part of Sketch Working Arts’ pilot program called Next Up! Leaders Lab (

professional development training focused on mentorship and education and networking) as a participant. This was the kind of program that would typically rely heavily on co-learning and organic human interactions that occur between the amazing people in the room, so in an attempt to recreate that kind of environment, I facilitated a “beach party”.

I had built a virtual recreation of our Faculty’s buildings for students to take classes in and hang out in (in an attempt to help recreate some of the spontaneity and charm of studio culture that is so central to architecture school). So for convocation, I added some additional convocation-themed flourishes and an after-party was held there.</image:caption>

<span class="unity-kitchen">The pandemic created a rise in food insecurity for those facing homelessness, and a core value for Unity Kitchen was to serve high quality, fresh food cooked with care, to destigmatize the narrative around care, and encouraging folks to grow their own food in a community garden planter would further the cause.</span>

The density of a large city often results in individuals mentally isolating themselves from their surroundings and their neighbours. There is undeniably a strong correlation between happiness and sense of community, and the Met on a Bench project seeks to connect locals by starting with something as small as a conversation on a park bench.</span></image:caption>

The collective creativity Candice and her team of student designers gathered through a hackathon, made for incredibly innovative work. Candice pushed carnival costume design by leveraging digital fabrication tech and pairing it with her expertise in traditional costume design to break new grounds, year after year. The DFZ team and I offered support in the form of design consultation, 3D printer, CNC and laser cutter programming and operation, and hackathon coordination.</span></image:caption>

<image:caption><span class="raw">I don’t know much for sure, but what I do know is that we humans are communal beings who need each other, and need to care for each other. Communal practices like taiko drumming are precious reminders of the acts of freedom, expression, rebellion, and protection that we need to practice and hone, for our individual and collective flourishing. As a diasporic immigrant from Korea, a peninsula divided by American imperialism, living on Turtle Island in settler-colonized Canada, surrounded by friends and comrades from all over the world, it is my responsibility and privilege to understand with an open heart and fluid mind that one’s identity is re-defined, constantly, not by essentialism or nationalism, but by humanity and solidarity. The complex historical relationships of our homelands are important as they allow us to have stronger ties, to witness each other and how we are all interconnected, but we must remember that our individual identities are constantly evolving and being re-defined by the roles we play within the spaces and communities we presently inhabit. I am grateful to have gained new perspectives of being in community through RAW.

mean to each of us. From afar, it appears to be an inviting and whimsical treehouse that someone could have built for their child. But a closer inspection of the interior reveals a different story. The walls and
ceilings feature elements that at first, could appear to be playful, but actually
examples of “defensive design,” a design technique that is employed to prevent people – in particular, those experiencing homelessness – from using public spaces to rest, sleep or find refuge.</span></image:caption>

satire only, to shed light on the serious
issue of the city’s homelessness crisis. In
the days of COVID-19, Torontonians
have been forced to re-examine the
importance of public space. For some-
one without a home, refuge can take
many forms, even if it is temporary.
However, the widespread use of defensive design has removed so many of
these places and only serves to com-
pound the challenges faced by people
experiencing homelessness. We must
redefine our urban spaces to be more
inclusive and challenge the images that
the stewards of our public and private
spaces want to create for this city.</span></image:caption>

spikes or knobs on a cement sidewalk; obstructions on top of a metal grate;
arm rests on benches; constant bright lighting in alcoves; sprinklers turned on
at odd hours; video cameras; to name a few. Unfriendly Treehouse prompts
the viewer to ask, “Who do we design for and why?” This design approach not
only amplifies the challenges that the homeless population faces, but it reinforces a broader unwillingness to meaningfully address the homelessness crisis
and the issue of affordable housing in our city.</span><br />
